The applicant will be submitting a Heritage Statement alongside the other plans and documents. This will describe the history of the site, relevant policies and designations and the proposals' impact upon them in detail.
Historically, the main use of the Ropewalks was to create rope for ships coming into the docks. The long, thin streets gently slope down from Colquitt Street to Slater Street, and further down into Paradise Street. They were designed in this way so that ropes could be laid along them to dry in the manufacturing process.
A much taller warehouse used to occupy 33-45 Parr Street before the existing building was erected. This brick built warehouse was demolished in the 1930s to enable construction of the current building at 33-45 Parr Street. The current building was later converted into other uses including the Parr Street Studios which opened in 1991.
More recently, Parr Street has played a part in the wider renaissance of the Ropewalks District, with a number of new developments occupying a mix of uses including bars, restaurants and apartments.
